Lucy Burke for 'Mic Check' Interview Series

This week we sit down with Lucy Burke of The Lucy Ensemble to hear more about her creative journey and musical practice.

Can you tell us a bit about your performance background and how you got started in the industry?

I have been singing since forever, performing in school bands and acapella groups from an early age. After leaving high school I formed a band and then pursued a solo career a few years later, recording my debut album at Abbey Road Studios in London as I am a huge Beatles fan. I've been performing around Sydney and interstate ever since.

What is your live show like? What can the public expect? What musical genres do you play during the show?

Coming to a Lucy show is a unique experience. No show is the same. Depending on the venue, we can play broken down acoustic intimate shows or pump up the atmosphere with jazz funk and pop tunes. Like my albums, my live show is diverse, blending acoustic pop with elements of jazz, electronic music and even funk.

We include a selection of songs from my music catalogue as well as cover songs adapted to our style. Inspired by such artists as The Beatles, Adele, Norah Jones, Taylor Swift and Lana Del Ray, I strive to create an emotive and fun experience, interacting with the audience through banter and audience participation.

What has been your biggest career highlight so far, and why was it significant for you?

One of my greatest musical achievements was recording at Abbey Road Studios for my debut album Botany Street. This experience was surreal and was the catalyst for my solo career. I’ve always been a huge Beatles fan, ever since my mum would sing to me as a child. It has now become tradition that we perform at least one Beatles song in our live show, adding our own jazzy flavour to their songs and every time we do, I smile remembering recording at Abbey Road Studios.

What inspires you to make music? What is your favorite genre? In one word, how would you describe your music?

I am inspired by various artists and genres which is why my albums and live shows are so varied. I get bored playing the same style so I blend elements of acoustic pop with jazz, funk and electronic synth sounds. I also love soundtrack music so many of my songs have a narrative arch that builds to a climax. Some words to describe my music would be 'fusion' or 'heartfelt' or 'honest' or 'varied.'

How has the Australian Arts industry changed since you first started, and what changes do you anticipate in the future?

Ability to earn money as an independent artist has changed. Whilst on one hand streaming allows artists to reach a wider audience, the ability to earn money from music is greatly reduced. Artists need to come up with novel ways to make it work - mainly through live shows these days.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to break out?

Skill up your social media promotional skills. As a musician, all we really want to do is write songs and perform. But so much of an artist’s success comes from embracing the business side of the music industry, networking, promoting, organising. No one is more interested in your music than you, so it’s up to you to make it happen.
