Australian high tenor Dr Leighton is known for his beautifully polished and even sound, exquisite phrasing, vocal agility and musical intelligence. He possesses a wealth of performance experience and a versatile repertory spanning Baroque to contemporary music.
Leighton completed his PhD (Classical Voice and Musicology) in his mid-20s at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, the University of Melbourne under the supervision of Dr Erin Helyard, Dr David R. M. Irving, and Liane Keegan. His doctoral research explored constructs of gender, performance styles, and character realisation in the secular songs of English Restoration composer Henry Purcell (1659–1695).

He has presented high-profile concerts at the Handel House Museum, International Anthony Burgess Foundation, University of Birmingham, and Australian High Commission during recent trips abroad.
Leighton is in regular demand as a soloist and ensemblist around Melbourne in all manner of performance settings. He has performed solos at Trinity College Chapel, Queen’s College Chapel, University House, The Kelvin Club, St Michael’s Uniting Church, The Canberra International Music Festival, WAAPA International Art Song Festival, Dartington Music Summer School, and on 3MBS live radio. In addition to his position as cantor at various Catholic churches around Melbourne—such as St Francis’ Church in the CBD—he has been a long-time member of the acclaimed Australian Chamber Choir which has toured extensively around Europe.
