Samala (Woppaburra. Lardil. Butchulla) is an accomplished designer and artist who seamlessly blends creative vision with cultural activism, leaving a significant impact across many artistic platforms. Known for her stunning and innovative fashion designs, she promotes and employs traditional Aboriginal clothing techniques, using materials such as kangaroo sinew, reeds, grasses, feathers, and weaving to create remarkable wearable art.
In addition to her design prowess, Samala is a consummate dancer with extensive knowledge of traditional dances from across Australia. Educated in ancient lore and women's business, she specialises in traditional bush tuckers and medicinal plants, sharing this knowledge through engaging workshops.
In 2022, Samala collaborated with Snapchat Australia on the short film "Love Letter to the Reef," highlighting her commitment to environmental advocacy. Her literary talent was also recognised in the SBS Emerging Writers Anthology, featuring her selected entry from the 2021 competition. Further showcasing her dedication to community empowerment, she developed and facilitated the Yabun Gamigan Girls Group at Brisbane Youth Detention Centre (2018/2019), providing cultural leadership programs for young incarcerated girls.
Samala offers workshops in Indigenous fashion and weaving techniques, bush tucker, and medicinal plants. She also provides an intensive six-day women's retreat on K'gari (Fraser Island), focusing on women's business and wellness, offering a unique and enriching experience for all participants.
