Johnny - Visual Artist
Johnny is a proud Garrawa Waanyi/Wakka Wakka man born in Mt Isa in the late 1960s and grew up in Darwin. He learnt traditional painting styles from renowned local artists. He recalls spending time with renowned artist, Joseph Baird-Wallis (protégé of David Malangi), who taught Johnny the skills, techniques, and methods to create vibrant art on canvas, paper, and bark. By showing his dedication to culture, Johnny was invited by his mentors to contribute to various works and so began his journey as a consummate visual artist.
Johnny is an acclaimed visual artist who specialises in the art forms of Coastal Northern Australia. As evident from his incredible body of work, Johnny is a master of linework. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Australia.
Johnny is also an accomplished didgeridoo player and toured Australia in the late 1980s with his band before making a name in Sydney as a skilled visual artist and cultural performer
